Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras or Pancake Day?
Many of us enjoy 'gorging' on food especially when there is a freshly delivered Chinese takeaway in the house, Christmas dinner has just been served or eating a belly busting sundae on your birthday.
Next week is Shrove Tuesday (25th) - Traditionally observed for centuries by many Christians as a day of self reflection, to confess your sins and repent. Shrove derives from the word 'Shrive' which means to 'Absolve' and is often occompanied with eating richer foods, that are then given up for the 40 days of Lent.
The French call it Mardi Gras or 'Fat Tuesday' and us Brits go with Pancake Day!
But whether at home or afar, religious, spiritual or casual, there are many of us that celebrate the last day before Ash Wednesday with a wonderful pile of pancakes.
If you're a coffee fanatic like us, then you will love this recipe for pancakes with a little twist. These are great for breakfast, lunch or a good old snack.. to be fair any time you fancy them!
What you will need;
1 cup of Plain Flour
1/2 cup of Milk
1 large egg
1 Tablespoon Golden Caster Sugar
unsalted butter to grease
Add the milk, egg and sugar into a bowl and whisk together until the sugar has dissolved.
Mix in a double shot of your favourite JavaHub Coffee!
Sift in the flour and mix together until combined.
The batter mix should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon with lots of air bubbles. If too thick add a little more milk to loosen.
Place a non stick pan or skillet over a medium-low heat and grease with the butter.
Use a ladle or quarter cup measure and pour onto the warm pan. Within a minute you should start to see bubbles all around the edges and a few in the centre. At this point you will want to flip the pancake over.
Cook until golden brown and move to a plate or keep in the oven, to keep warm until all the batter is gone.
Serve with either Maple Syrup or butter. Alternatively for something extra special, whip up some double cream and finish with a grating of dark chocolate.
